Ideas, Organization, & Sentence Fluency
- Have I divided each main idea into its own paragraph?
- Have I put my paragraphs in the right order?
- Have I gotten rid of extra ideas I don’t really need?
- Do they begin with a TOPIC SENTENCE, or main idea, for that paragraph?
- Does each sentence in each paragraph relate to the topic of the paragraph that it is in? Is it an example of the main idea or a detail or evidence?
- Have I “analyzed” or written about each detail, example, or evidence I used with my own thoughts or elaboration/explanation?
- Does anything from one paragraph belong somewhere else?
- Do my body paragraphs have enough “meat”? Are they about 6-10 sentences long? If shorter, could it combine somewhere? If longer, can I split it up?
- Have I checked to make sure I am following the assignment?
- Am I offending my audience in any way?
- Does it seem to “flow”? Check to make sure transitions are either at the end of one paragraph or the beginning of the next. See transition handout!
- Are all my sentences different lengths so it doesn’t put my reader to sleep?
