WEEK 7 PHYSICAL SCIENCE: Light I
November 1, 2023

Go to Week 7 Writing Homework

ELEMENTARY

ELEMENTARY HOMEWORK
  1. Field Journal (Draw and write about something you learned this week.) Length:  1st grade just a few words; 2nd grade 1-2 sentences; 3rd grade and up 3-5 sentences.
  2. Lab--Try one or two of the experiments on this video: Bending Light - Science experiments for kids at home
  3. If you have time, watch this Video: The Magic School Bus: Makes a Rainbow

IN CLASS RESOURCES
  • Light for Kids | Where does light come from? Learn all about light in this fun introduction video. (STOP at 4:20)
  • How Do We See Color?

HIGH SCHOOL

 IN CLASS TOPICS
  • Wave Behaviour | Waves | Physics | FuseSchool (4:14)
  • What Is Light? (STOP at 1:38)
  • Time Dilation - Einstein's Theory Of Relativity Explained! (8:05)
  • Light waves, visible and invisible - Lucianne Walkowicz (5:57)
  • A mind-blowing explanation of the speed of light | Michelle Thaller | Big Think (3:56)
  • Why Does Light Bend? | Concave & Convex Lenses | The Dr Binocs Show | Peekaboo Kidz (START at :33; end early 5:27)
  • Concave and Convex Mirrors (1:58)
IN CLASS LABS
  • Law of Reflection Explained
  • Reflection of light experiment and diagram drawing (Start at 1:42 and do together)
  • Science Experiment Physics (Comb) Reflection From a Plane Mirror

HIGH SCHOOL HOMEWORK

  • 2 Entries about this week's learning in your field journal with a drawing for each or paste in an image/picture for each.
  • Next week's assigned research (see questions below)
  • Study for Quiz. Week 7 "Light I" Google Doc (also found in your google drive under "Shared with Me")
  • Allison Homework:  1 field journal from what you learned this week & do this lab with 1 Field journal  Lab: "Follow the Light" worksheet (remember that light interacts with materials in 3 ways: being absorbed, being reflected or bounced off, and being transmitted or moving through)
HIGH SCHOOL ASSIGNED RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Add your notes to the Google Doc "Week 8: (More) Light" (by Tuesday at 6pm)

Week 8: (More) Light–some of these questions will be easier to just find a good image/picture rather than a note.
  1. What happens to light rays when they pass through a lens?  (Include focal point.)
  2. What is the best way to draw light rays when drawing light passing through a lens?
  3.  How do light rays move when they encounter a diverging lens?
  4. How do light rays move when they encounter a converging lens?
  5. How do light rays move when they encounter a prism? Why do they move that way?
  6. How does a “rainbow” appear?
  7. What does it mean when your sunglasses are polarized
  8. What is light diffraction?
  9. What is light interference?
  10. What is a mirage and what do we actually see?
  11. What are lasers and how do they work?
  12. What are holograms?
