WEEK 6 PHYSICAL SCIENCE: WAVES
October 25, 2023

Go to Week 6 Writing Homework

ELEMENTARY

ELEMENTARY HOMEWORK
  1. Field Journal (Draw and write about something you learned this week.) Length:  1st grade just a few words; 2nd grade 1-2 sentences; 3rd grade and up 3-5 sentences.
  2. Lab: (I SENT HOME RICE AND SARAN WRAP) Watch the video and try it at home--Video: Sound Waves and Jumping Rice Experiment | Energy | The Good and the Beautiful If you have a radio or speaker and want more fun, you can also try this: Can Sound Move Objects? - Cool Science Experiment | Educational Videos By Mocomi Kids

IN CLASS RESOURCES
  • What is Sound? | Physics for Kids | SciShow Kids (3:57)
  • The Magic School Bus Sound is Vibration (3:06)
  • What Are Waves? | Science at the Beach! | SciShow Kids (5:16)

HIGH SCHOOL

 IN CLASS TOPICS
  • Traveling Waves: Crash Course Physics #17 (7:44)
  • Mechanical Waves VS Electromagnetic Waves (stop about 2:00)
  • Time period of a pendulum depends on its length | Oscillation| Physics (1:30)
  • Sound: Crash Course Physics #18 (start at 1:06)
  • 15 Second Science : How does sonar actually work? (0:20)

HIGH SCHOOL HOMEWORK

  • 2 Entries about this week's learning in your field journal with a drawing for each or paste in an image/picture for each.
  • Next week's assigned research (see questions below)
  • Study for Quiz. Week 6 "Waves" Google Doc (also found in your google drive under "Shared with Me")
  • Allison Homework:  1 field journal from what you learned this week & do this lab with 1 Field journal  Lab: Sound Waves and Jumping Rice Experiment | Energy | The Good and the Beautiful If you have a radio or speaker and want more fun, you can also try this: Can Sound Move Objects? - Cool Science Experiment | Educational Videos By Mocomi Kids
HIGH SCHOOL ASSIGNED RESEARCH QUESTIONS
lease use bullet points and do not just copy paste a paragraph from the Internet.  These notes should take you almost an hour.  They should be simple and easy to study, concise, and clear.  Watch videos and read multiple sites and do the research so you understand what you are writing about and INCLUDE a GRAPHIC for EVERY SINGLE NOTE.

Add your notes to the Google Doc Week 7: LIGHT I (by Tuesday at 6pm)

Week 7 Light I:
  1.  What is light?  Describe light as we see it.  What exactly is light composed of?
  2. Is there a “speed of light” and what are its properties? What is thought to happen to a substance as it approaches the speed of light?
  3. What is “Einstein’s Theory of Relativity” and why is it important?
  4. What is “ray approximation”?
  5. What is the electromagnetic spectrum? What are its components starting with the lowest to highest frequencies?
  6. Which end of the electromagnetic spectrum has the greatest energy?  Lowest? Which part has visible light?
  7. What happens to the visible light rays that enables us to see something as white? Black? A color?
  8. What is meant by “adding light colors”? And “subtracting light colors”?
  9. What is the difference between a “real image” and a “virtual image”?
  10. What is the difference between reflected light and refracted light?
  11. What is the difference between the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection?
  12. What is the difference between converging light rays and diverging light rays?

ADD ON NOTES (#1-4 does A; #5-8 does B; #9-12 does C)
  • A.  Flat Mirrors–how do light rays move when they encounter a flat mirror? What are some examples? What kind of image is seen?
  • B.  Convex Mirrors–how do light rays move when they encounter a convex mirror? What are some examples? What kind of image is seen?
  • C.  Concave Mirrors–how do light rays move when they encounter a concave mirror? What are some examples of a concave mirror? What kind of image  is seen in a concave mirror?
